Block 790, Litterbug again ...

On 20 Oct, at Block 790, the lower floors of unit 244, a bag of rice was thrown from the upper floor windows and landed on the walls. This caused the rice to splatter and it had affected the family's laundry, windows and to top it off, the waste is very hard to clean.

Our RC will put effort to do a house visit on the upper floors, but we can only hope such education will stop these acts - to make things worse, it happens periodically and hard to trace a pattern. CCTV or installing a temporary camera has been raised, but not justifiable.

May God really help us to apprehend this culprit.

Tree Collapsed

On 20 Sep, it was raining cats and dogs. The weather was very cool and it kept drizzling for long hours. It was due to the heavy rain and strong winds, a tree behind Block 771A MSCP collapse. Thankfully it was a small tree and no one was hurt.

The horticulture team was activated, and within an hour, they were seen cutting down the collapsed tree to smaller chunks for easy removal, and it was in the rain. Such efficiency but rarely seen or appreciated by others. I have the opportunity to see as when I parked my car, the tree just fell. After an hour, when I went back to the vehicle, the guys were busy removing it.

Sometimes we should appreciate and encourage if good work is done, but residents have a tendency to look at the negative side. It reminds me when I spoke to a resident on giving appreciation, the reply was "not necessary as we have paid for their services"

I simply replied, would you like your superior to say this to you ?

Humpty Dumpty ...at Block 769

On 21 Aug 2011, resident from Block 769 called up the hotline to feedback her frustration on what she saw on her window ... an egg thrown from above, and caused mess to 3 floors down ...

Of course, when they approach the neighbour directly above them and ask them did they have eggs on the window, the neighbour replied "we did not throw them" ... strange ... ask got egg, reply no throw ...

anyway, with no evidence at hand, this incident will be recorded as children learning the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty" creatively ....

Service Road Parking

A resident have feedback to us on illegal parking along service road of Block 766, 768, 769 and 770 and have sent pictures to us and HDB to request for more enforcements, especially in the middle of the night.

Near accidents have almost took place as some vehicles parked on both sides of the roads, thus leaving drivers to drive like a "Daytona" driver.

For your info, any resident, can take a picture of your vehicle illegally parked with number plate, can sent the photo via email, and a summon will be issued based on the evidence given.

Resident of these vehicles, please do get a season parking ticket.

Cockroach, Cockroach everywhere ....

Today received quite a few calls on our RC Hotline of many cockroach at lift lobbies, drains and rubbish chutes ... some even called it mass infestation and another say seeing them would cause harm to their health !!

Well, most of the cockroaches will be "overturned" after a while as they came out for a breather due to their nests being fumigated, as such they have to find some place to evacuate ...

So next time, if you see many cockroaches and most of them are "upside down", no worries, they are on the way to heaven.

RC Hotline - You Share, We Respond

On 19 May 2011, a resident called to highlight about the debris at void deck of Block 766 left uncleared by a renovation contractor for about 3 weeks.

After a day of furious checking, HDB helped us to contact the renovation contractor and after 4 days (cos over the weekend), by 23 May 2011, Monday at 10am, the debris was cleared.

It is a fact that whatever we do, there is always 2 sides. Our RC Hotline, opened to residents since 2002, have been receiving regular calls. Some of the calls, we can offer immediate solution, some delayed due to checks to be made, some are out of our scope as such we can do nothing and some took us for granted ... cos residents thought we are full time staff with the RC - never did they expect volunteers is willing to offer such a convenient and personalized service to residents. We would like to appeal to callers that we will do our best, but sometimes we are in a meeting or busy in our own careers, we can only respond to missed calls when we are available.

Well, we are going to feature regularly, calls we have responded to and also in due time, collate those requests we received but are just as helpless, we can only show empathy.

Our commitment as a volunteer, we will always try our best but it does not mean we can do magic or wonders to accede to your request. Example, a resident called and asked RC to do more patrols as his home was a target for loansharks - but we will do only when the resident is willing to join us in the patrolling. He declined citing busyness, our volunteers likewise is in the same working situation as him.

GOT IT ??

We truly enjoy serving the residents of our estate as we also live here and are part of this estate.

Vandalism at Block 762A

Recently a resident feedback that his car got vandalized again and made a comment that the RC, police, HDB and Town Council have been informed, there was nothing done. It was also mentioned that his car was vandalized a few times, over the past 3 years.

From the RC perspective, what can we do ? CCTV ? Citizens on Patrol in the middle of the night ? Probably in my opinion, we have to weigh the few points before taking an action, like ...

1) Frequency of Vandalism - if happens 5 times over 3 years, we can literally do nothing

2) Quantity of Vandalism - How many were affected at a go, or just one car ? if just one car, it could be personal grudge, in that case, we will encourage owner to install his own CCTV. If a few affected at one go, we may arrange some watch groups among the affected owners - ownership of problem and solving it together.

RCs members are volunteers, who have a heart to put in time to serve the community in many ways, like event organising, sharing of interests, helping the needy and also putting our best foot forward in promoting neighborliness.

We apologise it our RC have not done well in some aspects, but we are proud to have 3 long term features (24 hours hotline, this blogsite and monthly newsletters) that many RCs do not have, to keep us connected to our residents.

Our RC is not a "YES MAN" type of committee. Come and join us and experience the way our volunteers serve. It will be satisfying and fulfilling.

Motorcycle Thefts and Youths

A media release from Singapore Police Force ...

Police have arrested four men aged between 18 and 21 years old and a 14-year-old female for stealing motorcycles from multi–storey car parks at Yew Tee housing estate.

Nowadays the crooks are getting younger and bolder. While it is not an offence to loiter at void decks as long as they are not being a nuisance, we still have to keep an eye on their activities and do offer a friendly advice when they get a little too rowdy. I have done that many times, and they do listen.

Should you see youths loitering at places where they are not supposed to be, like corridors, staircase landings, car parks .... call the police to do a check on them.

Cats at Block 787

We received a call from resident, that cats are making lots of noise at void decks in the wee hours of the morning at Block 787. It is very difficult on our part to find ways to stop it, unless we catch them !! But the catch is that it is in the wee hours of the morning, and by the time we go there, our presence will scatter the cats.

Our RC and Town Council have managed to catch 2 cats in the day time, loitering at the void decks and we hope that the "meows" will be minimized. If the meowing persists, it means we caught the WRONG Cats !!

Taking The Extra Step - Block 771A

Sometimes you wonder, when you see a car with 4 summons, spanning over 1 week at Block 771A, Lot 78 and is parked at the same lot, what would you do ? Could it be a "it is not my problem" mentality especially the car park wardens who from this instance, are clear indications that they are not trained to show concern .... what they would do is just do what they do best !!

Could the owner met with a mishap or is this a stolen vehicle ??

Well, after someone highlighted to us via our RC Hotline, we called the police to give details of this car and advised them to check on this unusual situation, the summons were gone the next day. At least I know, that the owner is not in trouble, and best of all, the car is still there. If only season parking is to be purchased, it would have been much cheaper than to receive 4 x $30 = $120.00 and risk of having more ....

Thanks to the kind and observant soul, who took the extra step to make our estate a more caring one.

Blood Donation Drive - Reflections

A write-up by another RC member, who was touched by the sequences and events during the Blood Donation Drive. Thanks Jennifer for the sharing her heartbeat on "WHY YOU SHOULD DONATE BLOOD"

Article as follows :

We successfully collected 164 packages of blood at our last Blood Donation Drive on the 6 Mar 2011. The organizing chairman, Rajoo, had initiated this project with 1 drive a year to now, having 4 drives a year. I salute to him for his belief and commitment to do this project every year. A Big Thank You to the members that help to support this project too. Most of all, I also salute to the many regular donors that have been supporting our Blood Donation project for many years.

During this latest drive, I saw a growing numbers of 1st time donors that have come forward to do their bit of social service. I also saw fathers/mothers and sons/daughters teams, It is a passing down of one of the most valuable experience to the young ones. I saw our new immigrants & new citizens in the line. There were about 10% or more people have pricked up the courage to face the needle for the first time.

I understand that every hour of the day, 15 units of blood are used in Singapore. We need to collect at least 350 units a day, as a whopping 100,000 units are needed in a year, just to meet the transfusion needs of patients in Singapore.

I have done a check on the Internet for this information on some of the health benefits of donating blood to encourage more people to come forward to donate blood.
Reduce the chance of heart diseases. The letting of blood removes iron from the blood stream through increased red blood cell production, which is a potential health benefit. It is believed that excess iron can cause cholesterol to oxidize quickly, which damages arteries and contributes to heart disease.

Enhance the production of new Red Blood Cells. As the blood is withdrawn from the donor’s body there is decrease in blood cells. To replenish it, immediately new cells are produced by marrow and this way blood gets refreshed. Therefore donating blood helps in stimulating generation of new blood cells.

Burns calories. One can diet or remain fit by donating blood regularly. One pint of blood (450 ml) when donated burns 650 calories in donor’s body. The feeling of well-being. The mental health advantages of knowing that you are helping somebody are immeasurable, but a study of elderly people showed a definite increase in the feeling of well-being and a general feeling of invigoration after donation.

How long will it take to replace my blood? After donating blood, you replace the fluid in hours and the red blood cells within four weeks. It takes eight weeks to restore the iron lost after donating.

How will patients use my blood? The unit of blood you give may be used to help save up to 3 lives. Your blood can be separated into red cells, platelets, and plasma. Red blood cells are used to treat patients who are anemic. Plasma can be used to treat patients in shock due to fluid loss as a result of burns. Platelets are used to help treat patients with leukemia.

Believe it or not, for these people, donating blood is like skydiving. They seem to want to master their fear of doing the act. After realizing that it is "not so terrible", their fear is replaced by a positive feeling. For sky divers, the more often they dive, the more their anxiety fades, and their sense of elation and competence increases. Likewise, for blood donors, their worries vanish, and they feel the "warm glow" of having helped others. By repeating the experience, both transform their initial anxiety into a positive – even addicting – experience.

A Gift for Families

A new initiative, never done by any RC before. We want to be the first and share this experience with our RCs as a way to "step up" or build a stronger bridge with residents.

Our RC theme for the year is "FAMILIES". We are taking purposeful steps by offering to give them a gift, which is a family portrait, and it will be hand-delivered to our residents personally. This is an opportunity for us to get to know them better during our visits.

Join us and for us to have a cuppa of coffee in your home, when we deliver the photos to you personally. It is a way for us to know you better.

What's Buried Underneath ?

At the perimeter fence of our newly constructed garden at Block 785, a resident living above, saw 4-5 people digging up a hole and burying a large sized bag into it on 21 Feb at 1am, before covering it up. It was reported by the neighbours that this was not the 1st time. Our RC will check it out ... will update you what we found (to be continued .....)

25 Feb 2011 .... for continuation, see picture and write up below

On 24 Feb, at 8pm, RC members and Town Council worker duly digged up the plot and found dead cat buried. The stench was unbearable !! Even though I have been to the CSI Exhibition at Science Centre few days ago, it does not make me one (even though I got the certificate). I am more like a KPI (KayPo Investigator).

My humble conclusion is that the cat belongs to a family observing the way it was buried with towels wrapped around and no injuries on the cat's body. All residents, please refrain from such burial as we may not know whether it would spread or breed any diseases. As much as I would empathize the decent burial given, but for a larger body of the community, I would encourage residents to exercise consideration !!

Stress Act - Block 766

In one of the most rarest incident I have ever come across, a teenager who was studying and residing at the upper floor of Block 766 was so stressed out that he took Milo powder and threw out of the window !!

This angered one of the residents from the lower levels and went up to investigate ... and finally found the culprit, who owned up and apologised .... and of course, being understanding and reasonable neighbors, the matter was settled and all hoped that it will not happen again ... we are also thankful for the neighbour in alerting the other afftected units on the lower floor, and explaining the situation on the culprit behalf.

In the end, neighbourliness is being restored ..... and it just took kind, understanding and considerate acts as the fabric of piece them them all together.

Drama at Stagmont Park

On 8 Feb 2011, at around 5pm, few police cars were seen rounding up and questioning a few young people at Stagmont Park. From a resident who saw the incident and feedback to our RC hotline, the youths and teenagers were having offensive weapons in their possession ...

We thank the alertness and fast response of the police team, in doing preventive work in our estate ...

Vandalism at Block 785

This is a picture of our switchbox located at Block 785 Resident Corner, next to vending machine. It was vandalized on 20 Jan 2011, and we are not sure what the vandal is looking for as it housed just the switches to the fans.

Well, we will be looking at our security camera and will determine the next course of action from there ...

Fire at Block 770 again ..

At around 8pm, the rubbish chute in Block 770 caught fire again !! For the year 2010, this block has the most occurance. How to tackle this problem ?

Our RC will first start by writing a newsletter on this observation and will put in every home, highlighting the statistics. Hope it will really put an end to this inconvenience to everyone.

Remember, as I recently drove past a billboard with this message "Fire Helps and Destroys" !! We hope all residents will remember this slogan.

Abandoned Rabbits ...

On 16 Dec 2010, there wasa rabbit left in a box at the playground of Block 767. It was obviously in cold as it was soaked wet with the weather in tears, when a resident called our RC to arrange for someone to "rescue" it. After 10 minutes, we arrived at the playground and the box was missing. Probably some kind soul have rescued it before we arrived.

Families should take note that unless the pet can be well taken care of, let's not encourage impulse buying based on the tantrums, whims and fancy or wish list of kids.

God have mercy on the rabbit and bless the family that have rescued it.

Beware of Loanshark Threats

On 21 Nov, the RC received a call from a resident from Block 789, informing us to help them as they do not feel secure. This resident, received a call from Loansharks, insisting that the monies owed be returned.

The resident did not borrow any monies, but the Loanshark is able to quote NRIC Number, Name and even address. They will say if do not pay up, their walls will be smeared, children kidnapped and burn properties.

Our advice is for the resident to report to the police, inform neighbours so that everyone can help lookout for one another. In unity, it is with hope that it will be a deterrent for any vandalism to the block. Usually, the Loanshark will harass till you give in, even though you did not owe any monies - they also know and prey on families with children, as the yield to their demands are higher.

If you see any persons, who is not a familiar face in the estate loitering along the corridors, do not hesitate to call the police and give a description of their attire, height, looks and even race.

This may just be a case and many more might have been affected, but not reported !!

Fire at Block 766 CRC

Are we having a serial fire-starter in our estate ? Block 766 CRC caught fire on 13 Nov 2010, at 2.30pm. The last CRC fire was just 2 days ago at Block 770.

All residents, please look out for any residents, who might be careless or lazy in the way they dispose naked flames and choose to take the easy way out via the rubbish chute.

Remember, fire destroys lives ... please don't let it happen at all ....

Fire at Block 770 CRC

On 11 Nov 2010 at around 10pm, the Central Refuse Chute of Block 770 caught fire again ... someone had thrown naked fire into the chute thus causing the debris to ignite. This is not the first time and Block 770 has the most fire outbreak in CRC, if my memory serves me correctly.

Due to the fire, there was a major clean-up the next day by Town Council workers. It pains my heart to see them having to put in extra effort to do cleaning, especially when their work is already tough in addition to long hours.

Lets help keep our estate a safe place, where we will not see fire destroy a home or a place.

Educational Funds

Yew Tee Zone 9 RC has set aside an “Educational Fund”, from our own RC Funds. We believe that we are the only RC that has mooted such an initiative.

The purpose is to benefit needy children living in Yew Tee Zone 9 estate, and attending tuition / enrichment classes in our centre. A family would only need to inform us and we visit as a form of accountability check. Alternatively, as long as we have a referral letter from any VWO (like Fei Yue Family Service Centre, Pertapis or others ... ) or from even via the MP, we will gladly extend the assistance to the family.

This is just a way the committee takes care of our residents of Zone 9.

In our RC recent Family Drawing Contest on 1 Oct, the theme was set to be "A Day With My family", where contestants are family members, big and small, putting their hands together and colouring using crayons, beautiful family outing pictures !!

They are all proudly on display in our RC Centre walls, as part of our theme to create and encourage "Life in Yew Tee Zone 9". Come drop by our RC Centre and see how hand drawn pictures can transform the centre from a lifeless centre to a vibrant one !!

This was "Season 4", year 2010 "Learning Simple English" graduating class. Our last lesson was at a Chinese Restaurant, where we gave out certificates of completion and having a simple meal together.

Our "Season 5" will continue again commencing on 3 Jan 2010, Block 785 RC Resident Corner from 8pm to 9pm. All are welcomed !! Anyone keen to volunteer, we welcome you too !!

Flea market

Our monthly flea market attracts people from all over Singapore to set up stall here. In The New Paper article today, we can see that such activity is becoming more popular among residents. So much so that the 10 stalls we open up are usually fully booked more than a month in advance.

Appreciation dinner for our Town Council workers

It is our annual tradition to hold an appreciation dinner for our Town Council workers. They toil from morning till night to keep our estate clean, and are possibly one of the least appreciated lot in the estate.

On 14 Oct 2010, we brought them to a cosy restaurant in Little India and gave them a treat. It was a chance for our RC members to get to know each of them personally by name and thank them for their hard work in maintaining the cleanliness of our estate.

Fire at MSCP - Block 753A Car Park

This is one of the few rare moments we report at happenings not in our estate, but it is only a stone throw away from us. What actually happened ?

On 13 Oct 2010, between 12 midnight to 1am, a car was set on fire at Block 753A car park which caused the vehicles on either side to be partially burnt as well. The cause of the fire was suspected to be 'Mischief By Fire". .. well, after speaking to more residents, it turned out to be the works of a loanshark, demanding payment ... did not get any payment, vented frustration and looked for a white car to burn ...

We would like to caution readers, who parked in Multi Story Car Parks to look out for suspicious people, loitering and playing with fire at the car park decks.

Dangerous Mischief at Block 792

We caught this footage on facebook, and can deduce that it was committed at Block 792 by a group of Chinese boys and their intention was to HURT as the conversation between the 2 of them were "released too early". It would be most unfortunate if the ball of fire landed on a person. What is this person thinking about when they commit this act of mischief ?? Once things happen, it wil be too late as fire destroys !!

Annual Post Event - Damage

Have we wondered what damage was done to Stagmont Park after a week of "Mid-Autumn" festival candle burning spree ??

Our Town Council workers took almost a week to remove the candle wax after residents and children have a good family time. While we do not want to stop these traditional lessons and experiences for our next generation, but the damage done is sometimes really unwarranted ...

Let us put our thoughts for the community as we live together in harmony ...

Cooking Workshop - Mee Rebus

Want your helper or even for yourself to learn to make authentic mee rebus from a malay family ? I have ordered from them for my family functions and guests simply love it. It has been one of my main food course for gatherings.

Come and learn how you and make it. We had it done as a demo before, but as it is not a regular home cooked dish, we tend to forget how to do it. Time for a refresher ....

Each participant will be given a helping of mee rebus to consume after the demo ...

Dead Cats ...

Town Council have highlighted to us that on 23 Aug 2010, Block 792A have a dead cat in the parking lot. We would like to caution all motorists of looking below their vehicles before moving off ... or it could be a cat that was killed and thrown in the parking lot ... like an incident happened in the beginning of the year.

Noting that there could be an increase in strays in the area, killing them is not an option ... but it is an offence punishable by law !!

On 27 Aug 2010, another dead cat was found on the pavement in front of Block 790. Looks like the cat was killed in a road accident and was picked it up and placed on pavement, but we cannot be sure as the cat looked intact, not crushed ....

Con-Man Around - Block 769

We have yet another feedback from resident of Block 769 about a con-man loitering and going house to house asking for monies. Below is the email sent to us by resident ..

Hi RC Zone 9, I would like to inform the residents about an incident happened on 23rd august, Monday at 1pm. The conman looks about 50 yrs old and teethless. He wore a short-sleeve shirt and addressed himself as Mr Liew. He told me that his daughter was injured in school and broke her nose. His wife named Linda would be back from work at 3pm. He left all his belongings in the car and had no money to bring his daughter to see a doctor. Thereafter, he asked me to lend him some money to sent his daughter to a clinic.. Without any delay, I quickly shut the door. Yesterday, when I fetched my kids from school, I gathered feedback from my neighbors abt the incident. They had the same experience as me . Hence, I would like the RC to highlight this incident to other residents so that they would not be the victims for this conman.

Our RC is grateful to our resident for having such close networking relationship with us, for the benefit of all staying in the same estate !!

Loitering Youths - Block 766

On 26 Aug, at about 11am, we are heartened to hear 2 residents working together in alerting police of a youth, who was loitering along the corridor for a period of time. He was wearing a cap, with little visibility of his face. The youth was simply walking around and avoided eye contact when residents walked past.

How did the 2 residents work together ?

When they saw the suspicous person, they alerted each other by contacting via phone. Both families took turns to keep an eye on that person, loitering on staircase landing. The person, sensing that he is being watched, left in a hurry and the resident followed from a distance to see his whereabouts. Unfortunately, he was out of sight after reaching a crowded area.

Police came and descriptions and his last known whereabout was given Though the person was not apprehended for questioning, the working and friendship between the 2 residents were commendable.

It is our hope as RC to encourage stong bonding among neighbours, so that the home will be a safer place to live.

Hand-Made Cards for Sale

During our last Anniversary celebrations, our Card Making interest group came together and made many different type of cards to raise funds for Sun-Dac Centre for the Disabled. We raised $216.00, which in the words of their in charge, it was no small amount collected for them during the 2 hour fund raising effort.

Dengue Cluster - Block 787

On 16 July, there are two dengue fever cases at Blk 787, resulting in a cluster in Zone 9. We would like to remind and advise residents to prevent breeding of mosquitoes by following the 10 minute mozzie wipeout.

How do NEA classify the area as a "CLUSTER" ?

If there are 2 dengue cases within 150 metres in 14 days, it will be classified as one. In a cluster, NEA officers will visit each home and the surrounding areas to check for potential breeding grounds. So to prevent harm by the Andes mosquitoes, keep our homes free from mosquito breeding.

Block 770 - Feedback from Resident

We are glad to recieve an email from resident of Block 770 on 14 July, commenting on the new black lift flooring, which makes the lift cabin dark, in view of the insufficient lightings internally as well. Our RC went to take a look and verified the feedback, and will be arranging with Town Council to improve the brightness in the lift cabin.

This is just one example of how resident and RC can make living in our estate better for everyone ... but one thing to note for resident is that the principle to agree and disagree have to be applied.

Graffiti Painting

We would like to encourage residents to take part in the Graffiti Challenge, on 27 June 2010, from 9am to 4pm. The artworks will be used as part of National Day Decorations in Zone 9 as the theme is "Live Your Dreams" !! To top it off, it will be done on a recycling theme, as the base to be painted are on the flip side of banners from past events !!

The usual logistics of paint, brushes and whatever that is necessary will be provided. You would only need to form a team of at least 4 - 9 people (can be friends, families or foes !!) and pay a registration fee of $5.00

Snatch Thief in Yew Tee

Well, thieves have feet, so they may just migrate over here and commit the same crime ... and the culprit is very unsuspecting .... KEEP WATCH.

POLICE are looking for a snatch-theft suspect believed to be a 10-year-old boy. He is alleged to have run off with the belongings of a tuition teacher from the void deck of a block in Choa Chu Kang Street 52 at 11.15pm on Sunday.

The victim, Ms Yang Jing Pin, said she was talking on her mobile phone at the void deck of Block 547 where she lives when someone snatched her bag. When she turned around, she saw the suspect running towards a multi-storey carpark at Block 549.

Ms Yang said her bag contained cash of about $40, two phone cards with $20 in value, a portable Playstation and her employment pass.

The 10-year-old suspect is said to be skinny and with dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a yellow shirt and black shorts.

Spiderman vs Fisherman

Few years ago, Yew Tee was plagued by thefts which many of us termed as "Spiderman". He would climb on parapets and be balancing on ledges to get into homes, whose windows are left unlocked.

Last month, Block 788, 790 and 792 were attacked by "Fisherman". The person would use a rod and fish things out from the windows, left open along the corridor. Fortunately, as greed would have caught up with the thiefs, they were caught after looting many other blocks. The alarming fact was that the culprits were all youths, between the ages of 14 to 16.

If any resident sees people loitering around, whether it is young or old, please do not hesitate to contact the police of even our Hotline, so that we preventive measures can be taken.

At the end of the day, "Spiderman" or "Fisherman", they all lost to our men in blue.

Precious water

For the past few nights, an observant resident has been reporting that the tap at Deck 1B of car park 787A was leaking every time he was on his way home after parking his car. Each time, we would arrange for a Town Council worker to turn off the tap, but the next day, the tap would be left running again.

The thing is, this was no ordinary tap; it required a pair of pliers to be turned on. It seems that someone had used some tools to turn on the tap to take water, but did not have the courtesy to turn off the tap tightly. Today the tap has been replaced with a locked one to ensure it is not being misused again.

We should all appreciate the scarce water resources in Singapore and not waste precious water, especially with the hot weather these days. And please be advised not to take water from common areas for personal use.

Rise in Crime - Break-Ins

It was alarming to hear that within 3 months, we had 2 cases of residents residing in Block 787, had their laptops stolen from the corridors, as they did not secure the window grills properly and had placed the items close to the windows. Even though some young adults are being caught in nearby blocks for similar crimes recently, we cannot conclusively say this type of crimes would cease.

All residents are encouraged to exercise wisdom and take preventive measures, like keep your windows closed (if your room or dining area is exposed to the corridor, once you are not present). A little inconvenience is better than the inconvenience caused by the loss.

On 14 May 2010, our coffeeshop at Block 787 also suffered a break in. However, as they had taken good precaution to secure monies, no cash was stolen. The thieves only managed to loot away few packets of cigerattes as their prize for the day.

In all, residents please keep a lookout and do not hesitate to call police or our RC Hotline should you see suspicious characters or groups loitering at places, where they are not supposed to be ....

HDB Parking Lots - Painting it RED

We have asked HDB to look into painting the lower decks of 4 HDB MSCP (multi-storey car park) for our residents, so that it will not be used by short term parking. HDB has replied to us as follow :

"In assessing requests for reserved parking lots for season parking, the primary consideration is whether the short term parking demand is high resulting in residents having to compete with visitors for parking lots. It is not dependent on the season parking demand. So even if the season parking demand is very high but there are few visitors parking in the car park, it is not necessary nor useful to provide reserved parking lots for season parking" The findings of our recent survey conducted from 11pm to 7am are tabulated as shown below :

Car Park at Block 762A, only 2 out of 35 lots at level 1 and 2 occupied by non season parking
Car Park at Block 771A, only 2 out of 35 lots at level 1 and 2 occupied by non season parking
Car Park at Block 787A, NIL out of 44 lots at level and 2 occupied by non season parking
Car Park at Block 792A, 1 out of 35 lots at level 1 and 2 occupied by non season parkin

As the short term parking demand is not high and the parking lots are invariably taken up by residents, we shall not provide or increase the number of reserved parking lots in the car parks. No doubt, residents who return home later would have to park at the higher decks as the parking lots at the lower decks would have been taken up by other residents.

We seek your understanding that the situation would not change even if we were to provide or increase reserved parking lots. In fact, if we were to do so, they would be empty most of the time on weekdays as most of the residents would be at work

Nevertheless, we will monitor the parking situation closely and will continue to take enforcement action on vehicles parked without valid season parking tickets or parking coupons in these c ar parks. This is to ensure that other motorists would not park illegally and deprive the residents of the use of the parking lots

Well, we tried and heard residents, but cannot win all the time. In good faith and being reasonable, we agree in unison, once facts are presented.

Suicide Case Again ??

I received a call from resident, awiting for news anxiously on this blog regards to news of a suicide case that happens at Block 762, on 3 May at around 8pm.

After much checking, we discover that the person was not our resident, but "borrowed" one of our blocks to complete the intention. It makes our area here rather errie as this is our 3rd suicide case for the year .....

How do we stop loan sharks from harrassing households, who are innocent victims ? Define innocent victims ....

1) Homes purchased from previous owners that have taken loans
2) Owner has misplaced their NRIC and was used to take loans
3) Homes that are used as a scapegoat so that neighbours can help chase debtor to pay

Do you any easy to implement idea, other than sitting outside the home like a security guard ??

I do have an idea, but really need more than just the household itself to deter the runners / vandals. Neighbours have to watch out for one another .... what is it ?

Well. there is a trial in putting movement chimes, where should people be walking past it, it will trigger a chime and at least, we hope it would deter them from coming to your doorsteps.

Recently on 20 Sep, due to strong winds in the middle of the night, a tree about 15 feet tall behind Block 771A Multi Story Car Park fell and we are pleased that it did not hit any vehicles in the car park or anyone on the foot-path. The fall was so neat that it did not block the walkway at all !! Residents please do not underestimate the strength of the wind, as such, kindly secure anything that is left hanging or exposed externally.

We had just concluded the Children Day Handicraft party and were glad to hear parents giving kudos in organizing an event of such a different nature. Different nature as parents have lots of time to chat with neighbors, children are occupied with handicraft work and rarely to find such an informal and relaxed event, where the main thing does not come from the stage. In Dec, we will be having students from NTU taking care of a Chinese Storytelling session and hopefully, in January 2012, we can bring in Ronald MacDonald.

On 1 October, we have a new batch of Town Council cleaners in our estate, as such, we would like our residents to give them time to settle in. I can speak for the RC too, as we have to re-work the close working relationship and understanding we have with the former batch of workers. Our RC is indeed sad to lose them but we shall also welcome the new workers in our midst and allow them to settle in here as soon as possible.

Last but not least, in November, on all Fridays, we will be having our annual storytelling cum sing-a-long session. Look out for our posters and banners for updates.

7月25日，一位居住在大牌787的居民家里的大水管严重漏水，所以她拨打我们的热线求救。我们立刻安排建屋局人员与居民联系，两小时内就解决事件。这位居民两天后拨电感谢我们能够那么有效率地帮助她，而且她答应把她的故事告诉其他居民。

Just after 3 months since we continued our classes after a 2 months break, the class has grown to 60 students !!! We welcome more residents from all over to join us for this gathering of people, coming together for the same purpose of learning conversational english - every monday at Blcok 785 resident corner, 8pm to 9pm.

We see them gathering together for a discussion session and our classes are never boring ... with lots of variations in teaching. So besides 10 words, they are now starting to listen and intepret English sentences, recognising words and also learn how to read posters .... how much more "fun" or maybe torture to some can we get .... Fire Hurts Homes ...

From just an innocent flick of the cigeratte butt from upper floors, this home at Block 765, bore the brunt of the inconsiderate act. The curtains that in the kitchen caught fire and nearly caused the whole home to go up in flames.

We are thankful that the occupants are at home and after detecting some burning smell, they discovered that their kitchen balcony was on fire ... What if this is to happen to you and how would you respond ?

Suicide Case - Block 767

On 24 Mar 2009 at around 5.30pm, our estate witnessed another suicide case at Block 767. It was a young female girl, probably in her teens. It is most sad to see lives being ended in such manners and would encourage that nothing in this world that has problems without solutions. It is just that sometimes, the solutions are hard to swallow, but after going through it, your life becomes tougher and probably would be much wiser.

Call our RC Hotline and we shall see how we could assist. In life, there is no such answer as no solutions to problems.

Take the Stairs

Walking up the stairs to get home is indeed a good workout. However, it is something you will seriously consider when both lifts of your block are too unbearable for you to enter, just like what happened to the residents of Blk 767 in the evening of 10 Feb. One lift had urine, the other had vomit.

If you encounter any dirty lifts in our estate, do not hesitate to call our hotline and we will inform Town Council to send someone to clean up as soon as possible.

Choking Problems ?

Are you facing so much problems at work, family or unknown sources that is causing you sleepless nights or stress ? Please do confide in someone whom you trust and look to ways to resolve it.

On 8 Feb 2010 at around 2.30pm, at Block 770 had a suicide case, where the main reason was family problems bugging the deceased. She left behind a widower and 2 children. Her neighbors have heard about the problem faced by the deceased and are not able to offer much help, except a listening ear.

We encourage anyone to really seek help and not find the easy way out, as it will affect many lives and it would include truama for the young ones.

Fire Vandals at Large !!

What does this mean to you ?

As of 2 Feb 2010, YES, the vandal is still out there, causing damage without thinking of consequences. The bicycle cover at Block 767 was being burnt and fortunately, it did not manage to gut down the whole bicycle, if not, another staircase landing will be badly damaged.

Another vandal that likes to play with fire is the one that is always burning tissue papers to the rubbish bin at Block 766. On 6 Feb 2010, the act has been replayed and we may in the end, remove the whole bin as a precautionary measure.

At Block 765, a unit on level 3, in late December, the family had to deal with their curtains being burnt after a lighter was thrown down from the upper floors.

Well, are we going to see a BIG FIRE in our estate this coming new year season ? At the rate the vandals go, I will not be surprised unless residents come together and look out for one another ... as fires destroys and affects lives.

Excess Baggage ??

We received a call from NEA, that in the midst of their rounds, a bag of refuse was found outside a unit at Block 766, untied and with flies hovering above. The owner of the home has obviously gone out and had forgotten about this baggage.

It is our hope that it was not left for too long a time cos the stench will affect neighbours. Anyway, after their call, our RC member staying at that block, promptly took a picture and removed it, in case it is a baggage which the resident wanted.

Another case of mischief

At around 9.20am on 31 Jan, a resident at Blk 764 awoke to a burning smell. Upon investigation, someone had set fire to a cloth and straw mat beside the staircase. With the help of neighbours, they put out the small fire. Subsequently the SCDF and police were called in to investigate the matter.

Residents are advised not to leave flammable items in the corridors, and to be vigilant and inform the police if any suspicious characters are spotted loitering around.

Passive Approach ? We Prefer Proactive ...

Our RC office received this note on our main door on 14 Jan 2010. It is from a resident who is upset that we have forgotten to switch off the fans at the resident corner, after our free english class on Monday. The fans were left switched on for the past 3 days and the writer is upset that what we do is not in alignment with the government policies to save electricity.

Granted the fact that we have made a mistake for forgetting to switch off the fans, we apologise and asked for forgiveness if we have upset concerned residents. However, we hope this would not blind the fact that we have served residents with many other good initiatives.

Unknown to the writer that our RC appreciates proactive and up-front problem solving methods, rather than passive and anonymous ways like this. We do hope to see more residents coming forward to watch and guide us.

What do we mean by Proactive approach ?

If this particular mistake by us was observed on Tuesday, the resident could have just called us on our hotline 67658586 and as it is manned by volunteers during working hours, you could let us know and the problem will be solved immediately. Your concern on electricity savings would have been met and it would be a win-win situation instead of waiting till Thursday to get our attention. Many residents have sworn by the effectiveness in getting problems and feedback remedied through our 8 year old hotline.

Killer Litter or Mischief ?

On 11 Jan 2010, at about 5pm, two flower pots came crashing down from Block 767. We received lots of calls to eradicate killer litter. Upon closer look, it seems more like mischief than killer litter as the flower pots were thrown over the ledge by the vandal.

On 12 Jan 2010, we have got feedback that 2 slippers came flying down ... this is further evidence that it is really the work of vandals out for mischief.

Residents have to really keep an eye on their possessions in front of their homes and do report to us or police when they see suspicious people loitering around their corridors or staircase landings.

Free Conversational English Class

We are so glad to have 43 students joining us, with 7 new ones, for our first lesson of the year 2010. The "old students" shared that they have been looking forward to learning with us and are surprised that new students came as far as Yishun and Woodlands to our humble abode and learn from one another.

A reporter from Straits Times visited us as a follow-up to the press article that appeared on 30 Dec 2009, interviewed some of our new citizens, new students, PRs as well as our longest attendee, who had joined us since we started in 2007.

We hope the article will appear on Straits Times and we will be glad to include it in our blog for all to read. In the meantime, business as usual and learning with lots of fun and fellowship is always the order of the day !

Free Conversational English Class

Our free conversational English class have been featured on today's Straits Times and have been receiving lots of enquiries. The class is free ... really free and is conducted at Block 785, Choa Chu Kang Drive void deck, next to RC Centre, every Monday 8pm to 9pm. Just attend the class to register.

The class will also have occasional potluck sessions, games and a must have graduation dinner on the last Monday of October, where all students chip in for the dinner session. To give one a better feel, below are some pics to show you the class environment.

Christmas Party

On 21 December 09, we concluded our regular gathering with kids and adults over a weekday (Monday night) Christmas Party, where we have proven against many skeptics, who felt that weekday nights will not have good responsefrom residents. Our event is without ticket sales, lucky draw or even door gifts. We gave an ice cream to all children as a gesture of thanks for turning up at our event regularly.

We would like to thank all the residents support for this 8 week event build-up till Christmas Party, where during the 8 weekly sessions, the kids are taught songs of dance and fun, as such our Christmas Party was a finale for them to showcase what they have leant.

Fire Vandals Again ...

Vandals strike again at Block 787, on 25 Nov 2009 at 1.50am. It is the same spot which the vandals last strike twice about 2 months ago. Residents have been asking for CCTV, for these gadgets cannot be used as a long term solution. Forming a committee to patrol or do midnight rounds was also another suggestion and it would only take place should there be enough residents to help us watch over the area based on a watch system.

On the interim, we will work with Town Council to ensure that the place will be cleared of fire hazard materials everyday .... and for me, since am a regular supper goer to Yew Tee point, about 2 - 3 times a week, I will patrol past this place as part of my responsibility, but no promises that vandals will not strike again !!

New Lobby Flooring at Block 787

Killer Litter

At Block 766, there is a particular vandal, who have been on numerous occasions where the ash tray section of the green litter bins are, threw rolls of tissue paper in hope for it to be set ablaze. So far, quite a fair number of bins have been replaced in this block, due to this act by a resident.

We will look into ways to stop this act by the vandal, as playing with fire is definately a NO NO !!

Mooncake Demo - Off Site

We have conducted Mooncake Demos for few years for our residents and it might have been word spread by all of you that we got called to do a off-site demo for a day care centre in choa chu kang.

A team of us went to Econ Medicare on 21 Sep 09 to show the nurses and some of the elder folks there how to make a simple "snow skin" mooncake. It was great fun for all of us as this session was a build up to their "Econ Group of Medicare Centres" Mooncake Making Competition !! We hope the skills they learnt from us is able to let them compete and win the competition.

We had fun and truly hoped it gave the elderly ones a sense of achievement that they are also able to do the same as all of us. All the best !!

We would like to thank a resident for highlighting to us 2 incidences of fire that has happened over the past 2 weeks. Arsonist has set fire to some items that were left in the CRC area (a mattress) on 5 Sep and old wooden or plastic chairs placed by residents on 13 Sep, early in the morning at around 2am.

After checking with the cleaners, a green rubbish bin (the ones found at lift lobbies) was also not spared. An article was posted in STOMP and many blamed the Town Council for not being responsive enough in clearing the debris, that was being burnt by the arsonist. The picture posted by the STOMPER is shown here.

In our personal opinion, Town Council should not be made a scapegoat for the incidents as arsonist / vandals could even burn the green rubbish bin, as such even if there are no loose furnitures along corridors or open spaces, they could also strike damage.

Let us be alert in the area we reside and look out for suspicious people hanging around the palce we stay. We have to work together and our RC will look into the matter and advuse on the next course of action where all of us will take ownership of what has happened.

We Have Reached 100 POSTS !!

Since birth of this community blog, we have reached our 100th post !!!

While our estate is undergoing repainting works, it is real nice to hear residents commenting that the blue is really fresh looking and not as bad as they perceived it to be. I am anticipating in excitement that once the whole estate has been fully painted, it would stand out from afar as our blue colour is indeed very striking !!

On the whole, the RC concern is not so much the colour. It can only brighten up the place and make it have value when selling it ... haha, but what matters most to us is the cohesiveness of residents in our estate. We don't want our estate to be "A House Is Not A Home", good to look at, but internally is all nothing but unhappiness and disharmony.

Let us play our part and make Zone 9 a better place for all of us to live in.

Vehicle Break-In in Yew Tee Estate

We have been informed by CCK NPC that there has been alarming increase in vehicles break-in thefts in the Yew Tee housing estate carparks. The culprit(s) would smash the vehicle's fixed front window/windscreen to steal the cash cards even if its concealed by cash card cover. Police advised that owners should not keep their cash cards in their vehicles but if necessary, to put them away from visual view and open the cash card cover to show that it is empty.

This week alone:
- Blk 511A (3 cases) - Zone 4
- Blk 527A (2 cases) - Zone 5
- Blk 513A (4 cases) - Zone 4
- Blk 771A (4 cases) - Zone 9

Pls also try not to keep other valuables in your vehicles (laptops/passport/cash). But if you have to, do keep a record of the serial numbers of the items (laptops, hp IMEIs, cashcard)

Yew Tee Zone 9 RC, besides being active in organising events for residents, we also see the need to support other grassroots organisations, who put in effort organise activities for different RCs members to know one another better and bond over a game or two.

Serial Cat Hater On The Loose ?

Just a day ago, there was a report of dead cats at Block 771A MSCP. On Sunday, 30 Aug 2009 at around 8pm, I received another call that a cat was being abused. The picture above shows the left temple / eye of the cat was swollen, a clear sign of being hit.

We encourage all residents to keep a lookout for people who show cruelty to animals. Please report them to the police or if you see any deceased or abused cats in our estate (Block 762 to 792) only, do call our RC Hotline to inform us.

On 30 Aug 2009 at around noon, I received a call from resident that there homes are filled with incense smoke after coming home. As it was raining around that time, incense offerers literally brought the bins, which was placed at a distance, closer to the void decks to avoid being drenched in the rain.

Some residents might have felt that the bins was already there, as such it is not their problem. In RC opionion, 2 wrongs don't make a right, as such, it consideration is exercised prior buring, no one would burn at the picture location as it would clearly affect our lower floor neighbour.

We hope the piousness in our lives do not blind us on the human side of being considerate to others.

Dead Kittens in Block 771A MSCP

On Saturday morning around 8am, as I was walking to my vehicle, an empty parking lot saw 2 dead kittens. It could either had been "murdered" and placed at the lot or both of them could have been resting at the tyres of the parked vehicle and unknown to the driver, he might have drove off and crushed the kittens in their sleep.

Assuming the latter is how it happened, all car drivers could exercise some caution by looking under their vehicles prior driving off. I do not have this habit but after seeing the 2 dead kittens, I can only be safe than sorry.

Beware of Molester / Flasher

We have received hotline calls recently that a Chinese man have been loitering at Block 789 link building or at void decks, looking for school girls who is coming home from school alone. He would approach them by asking a question or two, while touching his private parts. It was reported that he would try and touch the kids, but so far to no avail.

All parents are encouraged to warn their children about this and also assist to report to police or call HOTLINE if they encounter such perverts.

CCTV - Is this the way to go for us ??

Recently there have been some car break-in at Block 762A Multi Storey Car Park (MSCP), with 2 cars being vandalised or broken into in 2 seperate days. The immediate call from those affected and previously affected was install a CCTV to make this place safer to live in.

Before installing CCTV, are car owners that park their vehicles in the MSCP willing to fork out extra for their parking fees ?? Maybe there could be a better solution. Come forward with your suggestions and our RC will work with you if the proposed solution includes your good self in the picture.

Arrest of A Fraudster

I would like to thank a resident for calling the HOTLINE when a man, claiming to be a resident of Block 789, approached different homes in that block sociliting for money, on pretext that his child is sick, wife is not home yet and would like to borrow some money for medical needs. She was alert and fast enough to highlight to us, and we made a police report on her behalf with details of the man given to them.

We called our sources in that block to alert them and call us when they spot him. We gave some advise as to what to look out for and spend time to small talk with him, so that it would delay his departure while awaiting for the police to arrive.

The man was in his 50's, smartly dressed and spoke eloquently. When the police were on their way and would like to narrow the man's location, one of our sources called and we managed to direct the police to his spot, and they were spot on. The man was subsequently arrested and he was wanted for frauds in CCK areas as well.

Well, all of us play a part in his arrest when it took 45 mins from the call to the arrest being made. It goes to show that we can keep the community we live in safe, as long as all of us are observant to the things happen around us and care enough to take action.

We would like to thank our members for labouriously taking time off to prepare and decorate Block 787 as part of our RC National Day decoration. It is simple, but the amount of effort put in is huge!! Members have to cut out the stars manually, spray paint on it and also find matching colour ribbons to coincide with this year National Day logo.

We hope residents could also put flags to celebrate National Day with the nation.

Usage of Lifts As Rubbish Bin

Of late, a resident at Block 768 have been using the lifts as their dumping ground. It has been observed that on various days, a box of rubbish have been found. We would like to highlight that our RC and TC will not hesitate to take action if we discover the person who is doing it.

We came to understand that the resident may be too lazy to bring the items to the ground floor. Please bear in mind that our Town Council workers do not ply in the lifts to check on rubbish, so the addressed to soon enough for the comfort of other residents.

Fake Contractor

We came to understand from a resident that a fake contractor have been going around recommending to change main doors as they claimed that HDB will be painting their front door only, and not inside. We would like to clarify that there is no such HDB instructions at all. The price of doors are being overcharged as well.

Please do exercise caution when you meet a contractor claiming to be representing HDB or Town Council. All working staffs of HDB and Town Council carry identification passes. Call us at our HOTLINE if you are in doubt.

Changing your Main Gate? Be Warned!

There is a contractor (maybe even more than one) going around knocking residents' doors, claiming to be the official contractor for the current re-roofing and repair works, offering to change your main gate for a certain sum.

A few points to note:
1) Town Council has not authorized any contractor to change residents' main gate. In the event that they do, you will receive an official letter from them.

2) Since there is no authorization by Town Council or HDB, our RC and the government agencies shall not be responsible for any dealings with any such contractors offering to change your front gate for whatever price; it will be at your own risk.

3) An official contractor will usually leave their contact details and give you time to consider. This particular one making the rounds was employing hard-sell tactics, claiming it was a one-time offer and they would not come back again, using time pressure to bait residents.

CRIME ALERT: THEFT FROM VEHICLES

Recently, several cases of theft from vehicles had occurred at the car parks of housing estates. The cases were believed to be committed overnight when human traffic was low. The culprit(s) would smash the vehicle’s front window or windscreen to steal the cash card.

2 It is important to note that such thefts can be prevented and you can play an important role in our continued efforts to deter crimes of such nature by adopting the following crime prevention measures:

i. Avoid parking your vehicle in secluded and dimly-lit areas.

ii. Never leave any removable valuable items such as money, cash cards, laptops, etc exposed in your vehicle, even for a short period of time.

iii. Keep a record of the serial numbers of valuable items such as laptops, handphones (IMEI no.) and/or cash cards. This information could help the Police in our investigations.

What's that smell?

While a resident at Blk 785 was going about doing her household chores around 3pm today, she smelled something burning. It wasn't coming from anywhere in her home, so she decided to check outside. When she opened her door, she was greeted with smoke and a pungent smell. Sounds of people scurrying away could be heard.

By the time she unlocked her gate and went out, she saw the smoldering mess left behind at the staircase outside her home. A student in school uniform was spotted at the lift lobby, and upon being questioned he denied being involved, saying he was here to visit a friend, then he entered the lift and left.

A photograph of the scene was taken as shown below. It seems whoever was there was playing with fire, burning drink cans and plastic bottles. The police was then informed and they took the evidence back for investigation.

If you should see or hear any suspicious characters loitering outside your home, please do not hesitate to call the police, especially where fire and your safety is involved.

First - Rice, Now - Yam Paste

Gosh !!! First at Block 769, we have people throwing rice from above, now at Block 786, we have residents throwing Yam and Green Bean Soup out of the balcony. Our RC members will start to go house to house to show residents the pictures that were taken, with hope that it will stop these inconsiderate acts.

I hope it is not a prank but just some children, who happen to dislike the desserts given to them and they in a haste, threw it away through the balcony ...

Rice-drops keep Falling Down - Block 769

Remember the popular song "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" ?

Well, at Block 769, someone is obviously in love with this song and to make it happen, the home tenant is throwing leftover / unfinished rice down from the home balcony. 2 homes from different levels, unit no 17, have complained about rice on the balcony.

We will be keeping a close tab on this row of flats and will not hesitate to reprimand the home owner for such an inconsiderate act.
